Abstract

Hegel's theory of representation is original. Yet it was not conceived in a vacuum. Three major insights of his predecessors contributed to its conception. They all refer to qualities of the imagination: its detemporalizing function (Kant), its creative force (Fichte), its religious impact (Schelling).
