Social formalism
pp. 92-126
in: , Raymond Williams's sociology of culture, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan, 2006Abstract
Chapters 2 and 3 introduced Williams's production paradigm and developments within his cultural materialism and within his mode of critique. But Williams also develops another position as he responds to the developing influence of structuralism within and beyond cultural studies. That position he both claims as his "own" and identifies as a "fellow travelling" one he recognizes within others. He calls that preferred position social formalism.
