Abstract

Circumcision, the so-called sign of the covenant between God and Israel (cf. Gen 17), has originally represented a very common rite, which only gradually acquired its particular theological function. Ex 4:24-26 is a very obscure passage which reveals insights for the legitimation of circumcision in the discourse of post-exilic times up to early judaism. The article aims to analyze the development of meaning of the Hebrew text in the ancient and modern reception history (especially M. Douglas; S. Freud).
