From consecutive interpreting to "translation-in-talk"

This chapter introduces the phenomenon of consecutive interpreting as it is commonly approached within the discipline of interpreting studies. A brief review of the literature on consecutive interpreting previews the analysis of basic conversational structures. The purpose of the review is to expose the perspective of the discipline of interpreting studies on itself. With the help of the review the phenomenon of oral translation is detached from the immediate environment of its production for the microanalysis of consecutive interpreting which establishes it as a form of interpreting. For the methodological application, I use conversation analysis. I consider conversation analysis an equivalent of static analysis practiced in phenomenology. At the end of the static analysis, I arrive at a refined definition of interpreting as "translation-in-talk.'
