Abstract

The greater part of the decisive ideological material in Hungary is published in periodically appearing journals. In fact, practically all such publications bring ideological articles from time to time (if only to offer proof of their socially conscious editorial policy) and in that sense all Hungarian periodicals are Marxist-Leninist. These publications are many (a list of them is found under the "Index of Periodicals)", but a distinction between the strongly ideologically oriented ones, and those which merely conform to necessity in occasionally publishing something of an ideological nature, can and should be made. The purpose of this section is to propose a selection of the important ideologically oriented, hence seriously and truly "Marxist-Leninist" periodicals, providing basic information on each. These periodicals are situated on the scale of ideological publications between the daily press and the book publishing. The greats of the Hungarian daily press are Népszabadság (MSzMP), Magyar Nemzet (People's Patriotic Front), and Népszava (Trade-Unions). Book-publishers are all State-concerns, albeit operating under different names, corresponding to the type of books with which they principally deal. Periodicals are also owned by the State and are usually affiliated with some larger group, but their editorial policy is strongly differentiated, following the personality of the responsible editor and the liberty he is accorded by virtue of the journal's, and his own, position. In the following listing under "editor" the person responsible for the contents is understood, which may be the Editor, Editor-in-Chief, the President or Chairman of the Editorial Committee, or the Director. Years in parentheses indicate the date of foundation. Ordinary vulgarizing journals on the one hand, and institutional publications of limited circulation (such as Yearbooks of Universities) on the other, have not been considered here.
