A rebirth of images
pp. 122-131
in: , Readings in the canon of scripture, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan, 1995Abstract
This chapter of my study will take the form of a kind of dialogue with a book which deserves wider recognition than it has, I think, received; that is, John Barton's Bampton Lectures for 1988, People of the Book? The Authority of the Bible in Christianity (1988). Professor Barton is a pupil of Austin Farrer, who worked in an Oxford which was philosophically and critically antagonistic to him and almost certainly incapable of understanding what he was saying about the Bible.
