Abstract

When logophoric terms the/an A (for instance, Husserl's das A überhaupt) are taken up into someone's use of language and are burdened with great philosophical significance, these terms must then be assumed of importance for reasoning. In that case, it must be possible to connect assertions of the form the/an M is P logically with statements of other grammatical forms, such as S is (an) M, all Ms are P, or S is (a) P. It would be very strange indeed, if the M is P, or an M is P, could be in no way rationally related, in a communicable manner, to other judgments and propositions. Practice also shows unmistakably that persons who make use of a logophoric language do assume such rational connections as well as the possibility of rendering these connections by means of the properties of natural languages. Our problem is to describe them.
