Abstract

Etienne Gilson (1884–1978) recalls the sense of strangeness produced by his first contact with Thomistic philosophy in Sebastien Reinstadler's Elementa philosophiae scholasticae.¹ Gilson, who studied at the Sorbonne with Brunschvicg and Lévy-Bruhl, was shocked by the bad manners of Reinstadler and the Scholastics who tended to label any opinion contradicting their own as absurd.
