Abstract

East Germany's image as the hard core of Prussia, where soldiers still goosestep and where discipline and order are the cornerstones of everyday life,¹ makes it difficult for many people to picture that dissenters² exist there. However, opposition in the GDR exists, but it exists under conditions which are different from those in other East European countries.
